Youll Never Get the Chance Again

Last Chance!!!
Is it really?

"You merely become a in one case-in-a-lifetime opportunity so many times."
–Ike Taylor

"Every human is entitled to make a darn fool of himself at least once in a lifetime."
–Henry Ford

Later I graduated from W Point and finished with my officer bones training grade, I was stationed in Germany. While I spent a little over 40% of my time there deployed to Bosnia, I did attempt my hardest to squeeze every ounce of pleasure out of the remaining lx%. I tried to go somewhere every weekend that I could, and spent endless dinners in German restaurants as well as consumed countless High german beers in countless German confined.

At that place was one problem. I was a young Army officer, and I wasn't exactly existence paid superlative dollar.

As I explained in "Do You Need to Salvage Money in Your Twenties?" I was living on more than I was earning. In fact, the deployments were a welcome (nigh) opportunity for me to get defenseless back up with my fiscal situation, considering there was nothing to spend money on, and, non only was I receiving a stipend for being in a hostile fire zone, simply I was getting my pay tax-free.

I knew I was living beyond my means and counting on deployments much like Clark Griswold counted on the annual company bonus to pay for his pool installation in Christmas Vacation (#aff).

But, did I stop?

Of course not!

Every fourth dimension I'd look at a credit card bill or have to whip out the credit menu because I'd run out of coin for the month, I'd think to myself:

Self, we have to terminate this nonsense.

Hearing the threat of dialing back the exorbitant lifestyle, Monkey Brain went into full panic way.

Monkey Encephalon: "NEVER GET A CHANCE TO Alive IN…WHATEVER THIS COUNTRY NAMED…AGAIN! CAN PAY LATER WHEN CORPORATE SLAVE IN CUBICLE Farm."

Me: "Oof. Sounds terrible! Amend order another hefeweizen!"

Then, instead of dialing back my lifestyle and reining in my spending, I told myself that I'd never have another run a risk to live in Federal republic of germany, so I should whoop information technology up while I could.

At that place were two problems with this approach to life (also the glaringly obvious one that expenses were greater than income).

Why "You'll Never exist Able to [Whatever] Again" is a Terrible Justification for About Anything

Most of our lives are a series of firsts and onlys. I've been to Reykjavík, Iceland in the heart of December. I'll almost certainly never do that again. Parents will merely have one chance to see the birth of their firstborn child. Y'all become the point.

However, aside from experiences that are physically impossible to replicate, such as the birth of your firstborn child, just because you oasis't or won't experience something again doesn't mean that you couldn't. Y'all may not choose to do so once again, but that is not the same as never being able to do so.

Nevertheless, when nosotros're faced with a conclusion, especially regarding an feel and going beyond our means to take that feel, nosotros pull out the kissing cousin to YOLO and exclaim "we'll never exist in [Bora Bora/Walla Walla/Our Adjacent Door Neighbor's Kitchen] over again, so nosotros may also [rent that yacht for the adjacent six months/buy the caviar that was mitt-picked and delivered on pes past a squad of Sherpas/hire the Goodyear blimp so that nosotros can go a bird'southward eye view of the Super Bowl]!" thereby, giving ourselves justification to whip out the credit carte du jour and spend well beyond what we'd planned to do.

But, we're simply using "nosotros'll never exist here again" as a justification to create future regret, when the reality is that, if you actually desire to do so, and y'all plan properly, and you save and invest wisely, y'all tin have that experience again. I used the justification of never living in Federal republic of germany once again to blow money nearly every weekend that I was in that location. Nonetheless, eight years later, I was touring Federal republic of germany (you lot can listen to a podcast describing my experiences at The Amateur Traveler).

The second trouble with using "we'll never…" equally a justification is that if yous do information technology once, Monkey Encephalon volition learn that he can do it again. Each time you're faced with temptation to go across your means, he'll trot out the timeworn and proven justification. Since y'all'll have already said yes in one case, it'll be much, much, much easier to do and then the second, third, and four hundred and fifty seventh times. You tin't tell Monkey Brain "simply this once."

Instead, you get on the hedonic treadmill. More than and more occasions get the "special" tag, and you have to come up up with bigger and bigger experiences to get that same level of satisfaction that you did the offset time.

And so, adjacent time you're tempted to exist extravagant beyond what you'd planned for and feel like using the phrase "nosotros'll never [WHATEVER] again, and so permit'south make this special," think:

Monkey Encephalon is probably lying to you lot.
