Bible Commentary for Luke 15:32
Wesley's Notes for Luke 15:32
15:32 This thy brother was dead, and is alive - A k of these delicate touches in the inspired writings escape an inattentive reader. In #Lu fifteen:30|, the elder son had unkindly and indecently said, This thy son. The father in his reply mildly reproves him, and tenderly says, This thy brother - Amazing intimation, that the best of men ought to account the worst sinners their brethren still; and should especially think this relation, when they testify any inclination to return. Our Lord in this whole parable shows, not only that the Jews had no cause to murmur at the reception of the Gentiles, (a bespeak which did non at that fourth dimension so directly fall under consideration,) but that if the Pharisees were indeed every bit good equally they fancied themselves to exist, even so they had no reason to murmur at the kind treatment of whatever sincere penitent. Thus does he condemn them, fifty-fifty on their own principles, and so leaves them without alibi. We have in this parable a lively keepsake of the status and behaviour of sinners in their natural state. Thus, when enriched by the bounty of the bang-up common Father, do they ungratefully run from him, #Lu 15:12|. Sensual pleasures are eagerly pursued, till they accept squandered away all the grace of God, #Lu 15:xiii|. And while these keep, not a serious thought of God tin detect a place in their minds. And even when afflictions come up upon them, #Lu 15:14|, however they will make hard shifts earlier they will allow the grace of God, concurring with his providence, persuade them to recall of a render, #Lu 15:xv|,16. When they meet themselves naked, indigent, and undone, and then they recover the exercise of their reason, #Lu fifteen:17|. Then they remember the blessings they have thrown abroad, and attend to the misery they have incurred. And hereupon they resolve to return to their male parent, and put the resolution immediately in practice, #Lu xv:18|,19. Behold with wonder and pleasure the gracious reception they observe from Divine, injured goodness! When such a prodigal comes to his begetter, he sees him distant off, #Lu 15:20|. He pities, meets, embraces him, and interrupts his acknowledgments with the tokens of his returning favour, #Lu 15:21|. He arrays him with the robe of a Redeemer's righteousness, with inward and outward holiness; adorns him with all his sanctifying graces, and honours him with the tokens of adopting love, #Lu xv:22|. And all this he does with unutterable please, in that he who was lost is now constitute, #Lu xv:23|,24. Allow no elder brother murmur at this indulgence, but rather welcome the dissipated dorsum into the family unit. And permit those who have been thus received, wander no more than, but emulate the strictest piety of those who for many years have served their heavenly Father, and non transgressed his commandments.
People's Bible Notes for Luke 15:32
Lu 15:32 This thy blood brother. If a son, then the returned sinner is his blood brother. Unless he, too, tin can welcome him, then "he" is the lost son. Stier says: ``Those who object to all use of fiction must explicate, as best they may, this story, for such it is. There is not even an application attached to it; the reader is left to brand that for himself. As a representation of redeeming love it has been well called the Gospel in the Gospel. In comparing with others, it is the Crown and Pearl of all parables.''
